Jiquilpan, Michoacán

This pueblo – Jiquilpan, Michoacán (a pueblo magico), population about 20K – 7 km south of me, is a lab specimen example of Mexico. But so is my own. What happens (here and) there, happens many places across Mexico. The grandeur of a culture, its celebration in the microcosm, often plays across its greater national universe.

And I have decided it is quite possible that most of us will never understand Mexico because we don’t understand the smaller places like Michoacán.

I met this cinematographer today and watched a couple of his self-shot, edited and self-produced videos on his phone. I was positively blown away by his art. He captured Day of the Dead (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJmbzQLysMc) like no other. He made it more visceral, approachable, and at the same time more mystical than any other photo, video, or evidence I’ve ever seen.

Watch, learn and undo what you previously think you knew about Mexico.
