I prefer fixing an appliance (or anything) to replacing it.
Example. One of my pedestal mounted air-circulating fans broke. I took it apart but couldn’t see anything physically wrong with the electrical motor apparatus so this afternoon I took it to a repair shop.
They fixed it for $4 (an overcharge probably, but what the heck) whereas to replace it would have cost $16.
The repair transaction was not only economically sound but was also a better choice for the the local economy inasmuch as the shop earned 80 pesos with zero capitol investment and in doing so paid down – so to speak – their respective tool and rental costs.
PS – And the environment is a much much happier place.
