Contrasting the Mexican flavor of misbehavior to that of the El Norte Americano flavor of misbehavior has been sort of a recent epiphany to me.
In the US, Americans’ feel entitled to bitch out waitstaff, workers, or anyone else that they feel are safely below them economically. Why? Because there are well understood legal boundaries about what constitutes harassment, violence, and reciprocity.
In Mexico it’s entirely different. For one, there are no real boundaries. Disrespecting your neighbor, waiter, or such can can bring the world down on your head.
You don’t disrespect someone here unless you possess all the facts.
In the US there is a lot of grey between right and wrong.
In Mexico, not so. The difference between right and wrong is a very fine black line and you transgress at your own peril.
